TRUCKS (Class 3-8)

Under the Federal Governments mandate the only required mirrors on trucks from 10,001 pounds to 33,001 plus pounds Gross Vehicle Weight is a 7 x 7 inch flat glass mirror on each side of the truck. (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 111).

To try and overcome the problems of “blind spots” in the operators vision left by this mandate operators have for years added convex mirrors below the flat glass mirror and on the hood/fender.

Even with these efforts “blind spots” still exist and are a serious cause of truck crashes and near-misses in the trucking industry. The University of Michigan Transportation Institute sets forth priority areas around the truck for driver vision improvement.

American Trucking Associations—Trucking Safety Facts
“In fatal crashes involving a car and a truck, 35 percent of the time the crash occurred in one of the four blind spots surrounding large trucks.”
